Huntington's disease leads to the gradual deterioration of nerve cells in the brain, impacting an individual's movement, cognitive functions, and mental health.
Symptoms can develop at any time, but they often begin between the ages of 30 and 40. If the disease develops before age 20, it's referred to as juvenile Huntington's Disease.
Huntington's Disease is hereditary. Each child of a parent with HD has a 50% chance of carrying this gene.
Huntington's can not be cured, but symptoms can be treated through medications.
The gene that causes Huntington's Disease wasn't discovered until 1994.
